Tom Tisdell
Tom Tisdell is a dedicated life-long musician. Born and raised in Holyoke, MA, Tom was first introduced to music by his grandmother at 4 years old by attending regular concerts at the Valley Arena. In 3rd grade, Tom wished to begin playing saxophone, but instead started clarinet lessons with local jazz musician Red Herbert. After studying with Herbert for 10 years, Tom switched to alto saxophone which he played throughout high school. Upon graduating in 1962, Tom joined the U.S. Air Force where he auditioned for and was invited to join the Patrick Band in Cocoa Beach Florida. In 1965, Tom was assigned to the 8th Air Force Band at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA. During his time in the service, Tom remembers performing for many United States Presidents and other dignitaries, as well as connecting with many talented jazz musicians who shaped his career.
After serving with the Air Force, Tom attended Holyoke Community College, and then Westfield State University from which he graduated in 1971. While attending school he played tenor saxophone locally, and also conducted the H.C.C. Jazz Band for 2 years. Tom went on to receive his Master’s Degree from American International College in 1981.
Tom has over 30 years of teaching experience serving as the Holyoke High School Band Director before becoming the Supervisor of Instrumental Music in the Holyoke School District. He received the prestigious Holyoke Civic Pride Award in 2002 for his efforts in promoting the City of Holyoke through his dedication to musical excellence. Upon retiring in 2004, Tom formed and directed the American International College Pep Band for 6 years. Other notable involvement includes; The New England Doo Wop Society House Band, the MAJE Big Band, the Don Bastarache Big Band, Jazz Jam Sessions at Brennan’s Pub, and the Bobby Wright Scholarship for Jazz Education Students.
